Humpy pulls out of Candidates over security fears

Koneru Humpy withdrew from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament on March 23 in Iran, citing security concerns linked to the ongoing regional conflict.
The Indian grandmaster, a top contender for the world title cycle, stepped aside as tensions rose, reshaping the tournament lineup before it begins.
“I have decided not to participate due to the situation,” Humpy said. A source added, “Safety had to come first.”
An official noted, “Player security is the priority,” confirming the impact on the event.
Her withdrawal removes a major challenger—leaving the race more open even before the first round.
