ISL kicks off in revamped format after chaotic build-up

The Indian Super League (ISL) finally returns on Feb 14, 2026 with a streamlined, one-leg format after nearly four months of uncertainty, administrative upheaval and speculation that threatened the season’s start. The truncated campaign features 14 teams playing 13 matches each, with the top-placed side crowned champions — no playoffs, no second chances.
Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant open the blockbuster curtain-raiser at Salt Lake Stadium against Kerala Blasters FC, a clash expected to ignite two of Indian football’s biggest fanbases. Later, newcomers Inter Kashi take on FC Goa, setting the stage for fresh rivalries.
The season’s launch brings relief after the league’s future was in doubt amid the FSDL’s exit and delayed commercial plans, only resolved after intervention at the highest levels. All matches are set to stream on FanCode and air on Sony Sports Ten 2.
“It’s a new test for everyone — but we’re ready to compete,” said a coach ahead of kickoff, while rivals vow to upset the champions in a campaign where consistency will be king.
