Steve Waugh: Tests define cricket, T20 pays bills

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has stressed that Test cricket remains the highest standard of the game, while T20 leagues are crucial for players’ financial security, speaking in an interview this week.
Waugh said Tests still demand the greatest skill and mental strength. “Test cricket is the pinnacle. It tests every part of a player’s character,” he said, adding that the format defines true greatness.
At the same time, Waugh acknowledged the reality of the modern game. “T20 cricket ensures financial stability. Players have short careers and need to look after themselves,” he noted.
The former skipper, who led Australia during its most dominant era, warned against neglecting Tests amid packed calendars. “If Test cricket loses its value, the game loses its soul,” Waugh said.
His comments come as boards worldwide struggle to balance traditional formats with the explosive growth of franchise-based T20 cricket.
